Scents of Purpose

“When it comes to fragrance packaging, visual perception is often as important as the olfactory sensation,” says LB Odendaal, IPL Innovation & Design Manager.

“When products sit beside other established competitor brands, one of the significant ways for them to stand out from the clutter is through a more iconic and distinctive design yet one that, for on-shelf display purposes, remains within the usual package dimensions, “ he explains. “When conceptualising packaging design solutions for perfume brands, however, it is important to determine the playing fields they will enter.”

For the sought-after 3-pack Cashmere Mist rollerball offering from DKNY, IPL devised a unique, and cost-effective packaging solution, incorporating a fresh new visual design for each re-order.
 
With crowded physical space ruling out anything too cumbersome or bulky, the IPL design team created a compact rigid board box complete with an acetate window. Allowing the consumer to engage with the product, the packaging design features an easel-type opening and display mechanism (a press-release vac-tray) that helps to differentiate it in the notoriously cluttered and competitive fragrance market.

For the Parisian fragrance house, Ex Nihilo, IPL created a high-gloss lacquered perfume box inspired by the French spirit of pure refinement and sophistication.

Manufactured with lacquered MDF, features of this luxury fragrance box include metallic electro-formed decals, a vacuum-metalised and magnetized elegant flush closure. The inner box features a luxurious EVA accessory lined with suede, designed to be removable in order to promote second use. 

For avant-garde and imaginative fragrance brand Juliette has A Gun, IPL translated an existing perfume box design into a luxury range of white lacquered 4mm MDF cases, in six variances. 

Approaching perfumery as an art to be presented only through a limited distribution such as concept stores, department stores or specialised perfumeries, the Juliette Has a Gun brand warranted the “ultimate in pared-down luxury packaging,” explains LB.

“As such, case inners feature white PU leather fitments whilst outers each display a polished silver, gold or copper electroplated metal plaque portraying the separate fragrance names in the collection.” Metallic hinges echo the coloration of each plaque, with the ‘Juliette has a Gun’ brand logo is stamped in the same metallic hue on the inside lid.
