The Commissioned Artworks:

An Unfolding

This watercolour painting was created in a spontaneous, organic style where the imagery unfolds from one corner, gradually building and evolving across the surface. It mirrors the nature of a journey — where you may begin with a vision, but the path, the people, and the projects you encounter shape the outcome in unexpected and meaningful ways.

The characters within the piece are travel-inspired, and their forms influence one another as they appear, reflecting the way each step in a journey leaves its mark and leads to the next. The painting is composed in the shape of a sphere, symbolising both a global journey and the growing, expansive reach of your company.

Just as your company has evolved over the years — shaped by collaboration, creativity, and connection — this painting captures the spirit of an unfolding, ever-growing story.

Fragile

I was very excited to be considered as one of the artists in IPL’s collaborative creative project. As an artist, packaging has always been a key factor in both my creative journey and professional practice. Early in my career, a gallerist once told me how crucial presentation is, especially when it comes to delivering an artwork. If there’s a high price attached to the work, the way it’s packaged needs to reflect that value. Otherwise, it risks diminishing the perception of the piece, no matter how strong the artwork itself may be.

For this project, I wanted to find a way to connect my subject matter with themes of packaging. I work predominantly in portraiture, using a unique technique where I create a custom stamp—usually a word, name, or number—and then repeatedly stamp the word in different tones and colours until the image emerges, etched in a web of text and fonts.

The word I chose for this piece is FRAGILE. It ties in beautifully with portraiture and can be interpreted in many ways. I deliberately selected a model who appears strong and confident to create a striking contrast with the fragility implied by the word. This tension between strength and vulnerability is at the heart of the work.

To kick things off, I painted “This Side Up” arrows into the background to create a bold, dynamic backdrop—both visually and conceptually. I also enjoyed the playful nod to how abstract works are sometimes hung the wrong way up… this one certainly won’t have that problem.

I incorporated the IPL stamp in a larger font to celebrate the brand and bring an extra layer of visual interest. It’s almost like having a broader brush to paint with. The pink and red palette draws from traditional packaging and postage aesthetics; evoking stamps, labels, and stickers used for fragile or high-priority items.

This project was an absolute joy to work on, and I’m so grateful to be part of it.

The Spirit of Curiosity

This artwork was created in response to IPL Packaging’s global reach, diverse offerings, and commitment to innovation over the past 25 years. Using a mathematical grid that radiates from a central core, I explore the idea of structure as a foundation for creativity. Each shape within the grid becomes a canvas for unique marks and textures—representing the individuality and inventiveness present in every IPL design solution.

Originally created as a stone lithograph, this piece draws on a traditional printmaking technique that relies on the principle that oil and water do not mix. Lithography offers both control and spontaneity, reflecting the dual nature of IPL’s approach: meticulous attention to detail paired with creative adaptability.

The grid mirrors IPL’s expansive, interconnected presence across global markets, while the variety within it speaks to the bespoke, carefully considered packaging experiences they create. This piece celebrates not only the company’s milestone but the spirit of curiosity and collaboration that has shaped its journey.

Flowers of Resilience

A hand, adorned with delicate gold rings, rises in quiet strength. In her palm, she holds two blooms: Patterson’s Curse (Echium plantagineum) and a closed king protea.

Patterson’s Curse, often called a weed, blossoms with wild blue, purple flowers, thriving in tough soil, blooming where others dare to bloom. It is resilience in its most radiant form, uninvited, unstoppable, and unapologetically alive in the roughest of environments.

The king protea remains closed, regal even in rest. Its petals hold tightly to their promise, revealing nothing too soon. In its stillness lies a quiet opulence, dignity without demand.

Together, they mark the beginning of a journey; In the hand that holds them, soft yet strong. One flower wild and resilient, the other poised and patient. One teaches us to endure; the other, to unfold. And a beauty that holds both without needing to choose between them.
